[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] was one of many GRAMMY winners announced this afternoon during a somewhat more casual event that preceded the glitzy evening show. Other afternoon winners included Neil Young, the Black Keys, Jeff Beck, and Herbie Hancock–all of whom were present to receive their awards. Sir Paul was not, alas.

McCartney won in the category of Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for his new version of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]the Beatles[/lastfm] classic “Helter Skelter” from his album Good Evening New York City. He won over a stellar list of nominees that included [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Robert Plant[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Mayer[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eric Clapton[/lastfm].
