This Week in Music Over the Years (May 22- 28)

May 22, 1958 – Jerry Lee Lewis arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport to begin his first British tour, along with his new bride, 14 year old third cousin, Myra. Although advised not to mention it, Lewis answered all questions about his private life. The public’s shock over Lewis’ marriage marks the start of a controversy leading to his British tour being cancelled after just 3 of the scheduled 37 performances.

May 23, 1991 – Photographer Michael Lavine took what would be the publicity shots for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nirvana[/lastfm]’s ‘Nevermind’ album at Jay Aaron Studios in Los Angeles. The idea for the front cover shot of the baby swimming was taken after Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl saw a TV documentary on water babies and was taken by Kirk Weddle. Several babies were used; five-month old Spencer Eldon’s photo came out best.

May 24, 2000 – A New York Judge told Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde that if she wanted her March arrest for protesting the sale of leather goods in a Gap store dismissed, she’d better keep her nose clean for the next six months.

[photogallerylink id=14158 align=left]May 25, 2004 – Madonna canceled three shows in Israel after terrorists threatened to kill her and her kids. A spokesperson said she was targeted because she symbolises the West and not because she practises the Jewish faith Kabbalah.

May 26, 1969 – John and Yoko began an eight-day ‘bed in’, in room 1742 of The Hotel La Reine Elizabeth, Montreal, Canada, to promote world peace. They recorded ‘Give Peace a Chance’ in the hotel room (Petula Clark can be heard on the chorus). The song was credited to Lennon & McCartney, even though Paul had nothing to do with the record.

May 27, 1977 – The Sex Pistols single ‘God Save The Queen’ was released in the UK. Banned by TV and radio, high street shops and pressing plant workers refused to handle the record. It sold 200,000 copies in one week and peaked at No.2 on the UK charts.

May 28, 1996 – Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan was rushed to Cedars Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles after an apparent drug overdose. The singer was later arrested for possession of cocaine and heroin.

  1. Kay Martin says:

53 years later, people are still writing about Jerry Lee Lewis having married the young woman that he loved… and still does. Although they are no longer married. they are dear old friends. Their daughter is the light of his life, and is his professional manager. An elder statesman of rock, JLL still tours and puts on great shows all over the US, Europe and other parts of the world. His last two very successful and highly rated CDs feature duets with many of today’s most popular artists, who considered it a privilege to be able to record with The Killer.
