This week in music history, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Kinks[/lastfm] released their popular breakthrough hit “You Really Got Me”.  This song would later be dubbed as the song that invented heavy metal, and would later reach number 4 in Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.  Click “more” to learn other interesting facts, this week in music history.

This Week in Music Over the Years (June 5- June 11)

June 5, 1977 – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alice Cooper[/lastfm]’s boa constrictor, a co-star of his live act suffered a fatal bite from a rat it was being fed for breakfast. Cooper held auditions for a replacement and a snake named ‘Angel’ got the gig.

June 6, 1987 – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Jackson[/lastfm] announced that he was breaking all ties with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Jackson had been raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and would don disguises and go door to door with the Watchtower message in cities where he was performing.

June 7, 1995 – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Radiohead[/lastfm] guitarist Jonny Greenwood was admitted to hospital after his ear was leaking blood. The problem was diagnosed as his arm movement from continuous guitar playing.

June 8, 2008 – Rolling Stone magazine published a list of the Top 50 guitar songs of all time. No.5 was ‘Brown Sugar’ by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Rolling Stones[/lastfm], No.4 , ‘You Really Got Me’ By The Kinks, No.3, ‘Crossroads’, by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cream[/lastfm], No.2 ‘Purple Haze’, by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jimi Hendrix[/lastfm] and No.1 ‘Johnny B Goode’, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chuck Berry[/lastfm].

June 9, 1994 – After an argument [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]TLC[/lastfm] singer Left Eye set fire to her boyfriend’s Atlanta mansion, worth $2 million (£1.176 million), burning it to the ground. She was charged with arson and fined $10,000 (£5,882) with five years probation.

June 10, 1993 – Irish singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sinead O’Connor[/lastfm] took out a full-page ad in the Irish Times asking the public to “stop hurting me please.” She blamed her troubles on abuse she suffered as a child. O’Connor was still being criticized for ripping up a picture of the Pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live the previous October.

June 11, 2004 – [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Courtney Love[/lastfm] surrendered to US police after allegedly assaulting a woman at the home of her former manager and ex-boyfriend. Ms Love was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. She was later released on bail. The charges related to an incident on 25 April 2004, when Ms Love allegedly assaulted a woman with a bottle and a torch at the LA home of Jim Barber.
