Restaurant Serves ‘Black And Bleu’ Sandwich Mocking Chris Brown, Rihanna

WATKINSVILLE, Ga. (CBS Atlanta) - A local restaurant has come under fire after serving a sandwich called “black and bleu,” inspired by the assault of singer Chris Brown on fellow performer and ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

Chops & Hops first posted a picture of the edible promotion last Friday on its Facebook page, with a caption describing the deal.

“Put your hands on this Caribbean black and bleu sandwich,” the message said. “Chris Brown won’t beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A.”

Backlash quickly followed in the form of comments decrying the seeming levity with which the restaurant regarded domestic violence issues, and some vowing never to return to the establishment.

“Chops & Hops past ‘celebrity sandwiches’ show a clear misunderstanding of the line between humor and mean-spirited mockery and schadenfreude,” one riled poster said. “There are tons of ways to make fun of celebrities, but in most choices Chops & Hops has opted for the cruel and misogynistic: making fun of Paula Deen’s diabetes.”

The following day, owners of the restaurant attempted to smooth things over with another message to followers of their Facebook fan page.

“The owners of C&H would like to make sure everyone knows that we and our staff do not support domestic violence,” the post stated. “Many of us have been affected by domestic violence in some manner and realize that this is no joke.”

They will reportedly donate all of the profits from sales of the sandwich, multiplied by six, to Project Safe Team 6.

“C&H continues to strive for a community driven, family oriented, great food and great service environment,” the post concluded. “We will continue to be involved in our community fundraising and charities near and dear to our hearts.”

Brown was charged with assault after an argument with Rihanna on Feb. 8, 2009 that turned physically violent, leaving Rihanna hospitalized with visible injuries. Brown pleaded guilty, and accepted a plea deal consisting of five years of formal probation, community labor and domestic violence counseling.
