She’s not just a multi-platinum, award-winning artist: Adele also gives good interview. In a preview on the Today show of the hourlong Sunday night special Adele Live In London, she talked about the superstars who love her, wearing Spanx and controlling the massive amounts of publicity that come with her territory.
You can watch the clip yourself, but we’ve pulled out some of the best quotes that popped out of Adele’s mouth.
On her Grammy’s performance:
“I had like three or four pairs of Spanx on that night…no, I loved it. Actually I had another dress made for the Grammys and I ended up…well I passed out in it. It had a corset and I thought, ‘Well I can’t wear that.’ So I ended up wearing this at short notice.”
On wearing her PJs in public:
“I’ve managed to sort of stay out of the public eye recently. The other day, I walked through Trefalgar Square [ed.: London’s equivalent of Times Square] on a Saturday afternoon. Tourist haven. I mean, I was a bit worried. I was in my pajamas as well because I’d been working the day before. All I had was these awful…I was in color. I’m always in black. I had floral track suit bottoms on and this massive green coat and some little pink pumps. Luckily, I mean I was really scared, but I had this massive umbrella. Nobody recognized me. A couple of people looked ’round but they were like, ‘No, she’s in color. And what would she be doing walking through a patch of Trafalger Square on a Saturday in pajamas?'”
On the wildest rumor she’s heard about herself:
“I don’t know, there’s been quite a few. Probably that I was adopting an Ethopian child. That’s not true.”
On losing her anonymity:
“I don’t want to be a celebrity. I don’t want to be in people’s faces and I feel a little bit like I am in people’s faces even though I have hardly done anything because of my voice issues, my music is constantly on radio. It’s constantly on TV.”
When asked about the big names who love her:
“I was getting emails from big names like Roger Daltry [of the Who] and Steven Tyler who’ve been going for decades and decades…The night before the Grammys Elton John called me at the hotel and I had no idea who it was. He just started chatting away to me. I passed the phone on to a friend. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s Elton.’ It still cracks me up…it did make me think a little bit like, ‘Oh my God, this is a bit of another level now.'”
On where she’ll be in 10 years:
“I just want to make music. I don’t want anyone chatting about me. Really. I mean I still hope I have a little bit of clout in 10 years, but I just…all I ever wanted to do was sing.”
