Michael Franti’s new song “I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like)” is all about being your authentic self. So for the video, Franti recruited a few people to just be themselves on film.

Franti told Radio.com his partner, Sara, inspired him to write the whistle-filled ditty, which is about finding someone who loves you for who you are. Something he feels should never be taken for granted.

“It’s really hard to be yourself and especially as you go through all of the steps through birth into adulthood and your teenage years,” he explained. “Sometimes you find that person in life that accepts you being that way…but more than that, they just get you.”

In the song Franti shouts out a few famous couples that, in his opinion, seem to have it together.

The first one that came to mind was John Lennon and Yoko Ono, two incredible artists who combined their styles to become one.

“John not only fell in love with Yoko, he fell in love with New York, with being a father, even though he had been a father before in his life,” Franti explained. “It was a really transformative relationship for him.”

Next he needed to find a name that rhymed with Yoko, which led him to namedrop his old friend Ice-T and his lady love, Coco.

“I know he has this persona of being like this tough gangster and L.A. rapper,” Franti said. “But he’s really a sweetheart… A real softy.”

And finally, Franti mentions Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who he said seem like the new “millennium renaissance couple.”

There’s another little shout out, which if you’re not paying attention, you might miss entirely. Right after he mentions his three favorite couples he sings a little line from Train’s “Hey Soul Sister.”

“They’re a band that I’ve known in San Francisco ever since they started getting going,” he said. “It’s kind of like my little nod to them.”

But the sweet love song is also a metaphor for some of the world’s larger issues like America’s political divide and full equality for the LGBT  community. These issues are something that informs all of Franti’s new album, All People, out July 30.

“There are so many things in the world today that make us feel like we’re just part of separate groups and that these groups can’t be together,” Franti said. “I really feel like the diversity we see in the world is something we should celebrate and not live in fear of. So this record is a celebration of diversity and equality for all people.”

For the video, Franti gathered a few people with very special talents like breakdancing, fire breathing and hula hooping. All of whom show how fun it can be to let your freak flag fly. Franti even shows off some of his own expert yoga moves.
