It looks like a deep pit in a horror movie, but this was used to store ice throughout the year more than a century ago.
This is an underground icehouse on the property of the Hampton Mansion in Towson. Built around 1790, the ice well is about 34 feet deep. Having ice in the summertime was a real luxury in the early 19th century. Storing enough ice to last throughout the summer was a true feat. Although from the outside it looks like a grassy mound, walk down the steps to the underground well to see where the ice was stored in a huge deep stone lined pit. What an amazing piece of history!
