Travel Gal, on the go and I love finding history! The (above) pic was taken while biking on the Western Maryland Rail Trail. It’s an old, but preserved cemetery. The stones date back to 1838 and beyond. Former residents of a small settlement near Fort Frederick called Park Head, are buried there. Kind of a “ghost town’ graveyard.
Bike a little further off the trail and onto the C & O Canal Towpath, and you will stumble upon a 1756 stone fort. Fort Frederick was built to protect the settlers during the French/Indian War. For the next 131 years, the fort and surrounding lands were farmed. During the Civil War, Union troops were often stationed near the fort to guard the C & O Canal. A cool place to check out with the family. They have costumed volunteers and artillery shows.
