The Wild Assateague Ponies Swim To Chincoteague

Today Is The Chincoteague Pony Swim

July 25, 2018

When I was a kid, I read the book: "Misty Of Chincoteague" and then saw the movie of the same name. I fell in love with the little town of Chincoteague Virginia. The book was written by author Marguerite Henry in 1947. It centers around the famous house Miss Molly's Inn on Chincoteague Island. You can stay there! The book and movie helped to make Chincoteague Island a vacation destination.

Today is the annual "Chincoteague Island Pony Swim", weather permitting. The ponies come from Maryland's Assateague Island. Yes, they actually swim the channel from Maryland to Virginia. "Saltwater Cowboys", volunteer fireman, guide the wild ponies. The first pony to come ashore is named either "King" or "Queen", and will lead the parade through town. There is a carnival, pony auction and much more in the small sleepy ocean town.

This is a bucket list trip for me to take one day. If you plan on going someday here is the info you will need: www.chincoteague.com/index.html
